History of kratom legality in Alaska

In August of 2016, when the DEA placed a temporary ban on kratom for the entire United some states passed laws classifying kratom as an illegal substance. Even when the DEA revoked the ban two months later, in October 2016, six states maintained their legislation banning kratom.

Alaska never passed such a law; as a matter of fact, state officials seemingly weren’t even informed of the temporary ban. As of 2021 the state doesn’t have any legislation directly mentioning kratom.

Because kratom is somewhat under the radar in Alaska, there aren’t many stores there that sell it. There are no regulations on kratom in Alaska either, so you should make sure to do research before buying kratom in Alaska.

In Spring 2018, when there were 200 cases of salmonella in 41 states caused by contaminated kratom batches, two people in Alaska were affected. One of them purchased their kratom online, while the other bought the contaminated kratom powder from a store in Anchorage.

The kratom that the person purchased in Anchorage was in an unmarked bin, and the kratom’s packaging provided little information about the kratom. If you’re buying kratom from a shop, make sure the seller can provide information about process methods, lab-testing, and quality.

Buying and Shipping Kratom Online in Alaska

It’s legal to buy kratom online and have it shipped to you in Alaska, as well as to sell kratom online in Alaska and ship it to other states where it’s legal.

As with any state, to avoid contamination when buying online, look for certifications of quality. Lab tests and reviews or endorsements can be helpful in determining the quality of kratom powders, extracts, and capsules.

Raise Awareness for Kratom in Alaska

While kratom’s unpopularity in Alaska means that it doesn’t face any legal opposition, raising awareness for it in the state could help people who are suffering from chronic pain, depression, or anxiety. It’s important to support kratom education, basing claims on science rather than misinformation.

In 2018, the American Kratom Association asked kratom supporters in Alaska to distribute educational packets on kratom to their local legislatures in their offices. This effort did not contribute much in terms of educating state employees on kratom, but future efforts may have an impact.

Though Alaska is generally libertarian in its laws, there’s no guarantee its stance on kratom won’t change. Joining the American Kratom Association is the best way to voice your thoughts on kratom and help raise awareness for it.
